The American Society for Occupational Safety and Health (ASOSH) exists for one reason: so that people go home from work as healthy as they arrived.

We are a professional society for everyone who protects people at work — safety officers, engineers, supervisors, trainers, nurses, students and the organisations that employ them. We set practical standards, deliver certified training, accredit training centres and connect a growing community of practitioners across many countries.

What we do

Training & certification

More than one hundred instructor-led courses across fourteen safety disciplines — from first aid and fire safety to confined-space rescue, gas testing and food safety. Every certificate carries a unique serial number and QR code that anyone can verify online.

Accredited training centres

Independent providers and in-house training departments can be accredited to deliver ASOSH programmes. We review their trainers, facilities and records, then support them with materials and quality audits.

Professional membership

Five membership grades — Student, Affiliate, Associate, Member and Fellow — recognise each practitioner’s qualifications and experience and give them a professional home.

Volunteering & outreach

Our volunteers run awareness campaigns, support events and mentor newcomers, taking safety knowledge to workers who never sit in a classroom.

Two traditions, one standard

ASOSH draws on the two great schools of workplace safety. From American practice we take clarity and accountability: clear rules, measurable controls and documented competence. From British practice we take risk-based thinking: assess the hazards, prioritise them and reduce risk as far as is reasonably practicable — then keep improving.

“Everyone home safe, every day.”

Our courses follow the hierarchy of control — eliminate, substitute, engineer, administer and, only as a last resort, protect with PPE — and every programme ends with written and practical assessment.

How we work

  • Practical first. Training is built around the tasks people actually do, with demonstrations and hands-on exercises.
  • Verifiable. Certificates, centres, members and volunteers can all be checked online in seconds.
  • Quality-assured. We operate an integrated management system covering quality, health and safety and the environment.
  • Ethical. We have zero tolerance for bribery, plagiarism and misrepresentation of qualifications.

Our values

Honesty

We say what we do and do what we say — in our assessments, our certificates and our dealings with partners.

Trust

Employers rely on our certificates to make decisions about people’s safety. We protect that trust carefully.

Quality

We review our courses, trainers and centres regularly and improve them based on evidence and feedback.

Respect

We treat every learner, member and colleague with dignity, whatever their background or role.
