Equal opportunities & diversity policy

ASOSH equal opportunities and diversity policy: fair treatment, inclusion and freedom from discrimination for staff, learners and members.

Last updated November 2026 2 min read Print

ASOSH promotes an environment of equal opportunity and mutual respect. Everyone — staff, trainers, learners, members, volunteers and partners — should be treated fairly and with dignity.

Statement of intent

We will not tolerate discrimination, harassment, bullying or victimisation on the grounds of race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, sex, gender identity, marital or family status, pregnancy, disability, age, religion or belief, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected by law.

Our principles

  • The dignity of every individual, who is of value in their own right.
  • Autonomy — respecting each person’s capacity to make their own choices.
  • The equality of all people, regardless of difference.
  • Solidarity — supporting each person to take part fully in work and learning.

Social model of disability

We recognise that people with impairments are often disabled by barriers in the environment, attitudes and organisation, rather than by the impairment itself. We work to remove those barriers — for example by making reasonable adjustments to training, assessment and the workplace.

Scope

This policy applies to all ASOSH employees, freelance and contract staff, consultants, trainers, volunteers and accredited centres, and to how we treat learners, members and the public.

What we will do

  • Eliminate and prevent, as far as reasonably possible, discrimination, victimisation, bullying and harassment.
  • Recruit, train and promote people on the basis of ability and merit.
  • Advertise opportunities widely, including through networks that reach under-represented groups, and keep job descriptions free from unnecessary requirements.
  • Make reasonable adjustments for disabled applicants, learners and employees.
  • Integrate equality and diversity into training on recruitment, assessment and management.
  • Monitor our workforce, membership and learners to identify and address under-representation.

Everyone’s responsibilities

Managers must actively promote this policy and lead by example. Everyone must cooperate with measures that promote equal opportunity, refrain from discriminatory behaviour and challenge or report it when they see it.

Raising a concern

If you believe you have been treated unfairly, please raise it with your manager or with ASOSH management at [email protected]. Complaints are investigated promptly and confidentially. Breaches of this policy may lead to disciplinary action, including dismissal for gross misconduct.
